"The Austin Police community has blessed my family with a support system geared to helping guide in the recovery from trauma from the sudden death of a loved one. My mother found my sister deceased a few weeks ago and the kindness bestowed on mom and I as we sat on a couch at my sister’s condo, while they checked things out, was amazing. I am sorry I do not have the name of the excellent crisis/ grief counselor but she was the most kindest of individuals. Each officer and coroner crew, fire dept, and ambulance crew were just a true tribute to the most positive aspect of the police department and our emergency Services of Austin. Thank you and know: That when you put your life on the line or help 'civilians' like us, You Are Making A Positive Impact on our lives and the community. The 6 month old pup who was in the condo with a door closed from my sisters bedroom, had been alone for a long period of time and the attending officers realized this. Watering, walking, feeding and petting a stressed Beagle was what is above and beyond the call of duty. The beagle now has a loving home with some of our friends. I put the thank you e-mail I sent out to our friends about my sister’s passing. I know that you just deal with people at the moment of the event and past history is usually unknown so I just wanted you to know about her life.

"The events of the last few weeks has been tempered with kindness, understanding and a demonstration of Christian love that is an honor to the memory of my sister, Jody. The faith she lived everyday is a legacy that we cherish and remember. Aunt Jody was an example of unconditional love to my children and their peers. We did not hesitate when asked what to put on her header there was only one choice and that was 'Aunt Jody.' My sister had no children of her own and yet she cared for my three sons and their many friends.

"We just thank you all again for the show of support, food, kind words and flowers. My sister commented to me that no one would probably attend her funeral, because she was homebound the last years of her life. The church was packed at Austin Baptist Church for the service. The honor you gave my sister Jody, by attending the service or sending cards was so impacting that I am sure She looked down from Heaven and said 'Wow.'

"I believe that the time we have here on earth is to show the love of Our Lord, and so I say 'Well done my sweet sister, well done' and I am sure she will hear it many times now on. There was only one Aunt Jody, Passionate, and a follower of Christ, and oh how we will miss her."

Congratulations to the members of the Austin Fire Department who participated in the 3M Half Marathon last Sunday, January 29! BC Chris Swenson, Capt. Jim Ryan, Lt. Stephen Truesdell, FS Donald McCullough, FS Dan Alvarez, and Fitness/Safety Specialist Summer Sides all took part. Capt. Ryan took first place in his age division under Public Safety. FS Alvarez and Summer both placed fourth in the Public Safety division. What a great way to show how AFD stays healthy and strong...nice job!

The blood supply in Central Texas is at a critical level. We are asking all eligible donors to please visit a blood center ASAP to make their donations. Although we were able to meet the immediate needs of our local hospitals, the blood supply in Central Texas has continued to fall below our desired stocking level. Due to several recent accidents and tragedies in our community, we are currently in CRITICAL need of O negative, O positive, and A positive blood types. Our local patients need your life-saving gift and we need to maintain a stable blood supply for our community!

Happy New Year!! We hope it's gotten off to a great start for you. We've got several miscellenaous things to kick off 2012, so let's get going!

The Austin Fire Department was recently notified that it was one of several City of Austin departments that recently earned recognition from the Southern Region of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Austin’s Flood Safety Awareness Campaign 2010 won an Award of Merit in Community Relations/Communications Management. Flood Awareness Week is a joint effort of the City of Austin, the National Weather Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Austin American-Statesman’s Inside Line, and the Texas Floodplain Management Association. Several City of Austin departments participate in this effort including the Austin Fire Department, the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services, the Corporate Public Information Office, and the Watershed Protection Department. The awards highlight the outstanding work of communicators in 16 southern states and several Caribbean countries. Entries were judged by communications peers from across the United States.

A wonderful kudos note to our folks at Station 44/B shift:

"Our family wants to sincerely Thank the Austin Fire Department #44 for an immediate response to our family during our medical crisis. Our son has had a stroke, epilepsy and sever seizures. Usually we can control them with medicine and a VNS implant. Our son had surgery on Dec. 2 and his seizures became uncontrollable on Dec. 3. He was in and out of consciousness. The fire department was very understanding and showed us sincere compassion till the ambulance got here. I wish I had the names of the fireman that came out, but during our time I did not get that information but They know who they are. God bless you for choosing your profession and being there for us when we needed you. Thank you from our family: Bob, Barbara, Tobey and Alysia Abbott"

The West Point Society sponsored a clean up of Mount Bonnell. Several members of AFD participated, rappelling down the cliffs facing Lake Austin to pick up litter. Those individiuals included Lt. Randy Elmore (E01/A Shift), Capt. Scott Bartell (Spec Ops), FS Matt Avery (E01/A Shift), FF Roger Davis (E01/A Shift) and FF Tye Baker (Q01/A Shift). Recent Recognitions

Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr and the AFD Executive Team recently recognized several individuals for significant accomplishments:

Battalion Chief Palmer Buck, a member of AFD for 18 years, who graduated from the Executive Fire Officer Program (EFOP) at the United States Fire Administration Academy based in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The EFOP is a four-year intensive curriculum that examines how senior authority figures can exercise leadership when dealing with difficult, adaptive programs within their jurisdictions. Chief Buck was one of 107 students from across the country to graduate from this elite program in 2011.

Firefighter Rhonda Harms (E17/C Shift) who recently returned from a two-year tour in Afghanistan with the US Navy. Rhonda presented Chief Kerr with a flag that her unit had flown there in honor of the Austin Fire Department.

Adrian Rodriquez, AFD's Warehouse Stores Coordinator, who was chosen by Stanley Tools as part of their nationwide "Builti for Life Unsung Heroes" contest. This contest pays tributes to the unsung heroes who make our country great and keep us going. Stanley chooses unselfish men and women who take action and don't expect thanks in return. As Stores Coordinator, Adrian is a crucial member of the team who keeps the department running smoothly every day. His diligence and "get it done" nature guarantees that the crew is always well-equipped and prepared to fight fires. The AFD constantly relies on him to have the necessary safety equipment stocked and organized.

2011 COACCC Committee: Battalion Chief Bruce Station and civilian employees Mandy Ray, Phillip Lybrand, Alisha Weskamp, Kimberly Costello, and JoBeth Prentice were recognized for their outstanding creativity in making this year's City of Austin Combined Charities Campaign for AFD the best ever! Our goal was $75,000 and although the funds raised are still being tallied, we know we are very close to meeting that goal.

Survey: City Services Appreciated

A majority of Austinites are happy with many city services, according to a new survey. The ETC Institute, a national research corporation, presented a survey last Thursday to the City Council. Among the findings: 80 percent of respondents were either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with public safety!

Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony

On Saturday, October 29, the George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center unveiled a memorial bronze sculpture (commissioned through the City's Art in Public Places program of the Economic Growth and Redevelopment office) honoring Austin's first three African American firefighters--Willie Ray Davis, Roy Greene, and Nathaniel Kindred, Sr. Prior to 1952, no African American had been hired under civil service law to work as a firefighter in the state, making the City of Austin the first municipality in Texas to do so.

Texas Monthly BBQ Festival

Texas Monthly held their annual BBQ Festival yesterday on the grounds of the Long Center. More than 30 restaurants from across the state had samples of their finest to share, and 3,000 attendees took advantage of it! The Austin Fire Department was a co-sponsor of the event, spreading safe outdoor cooking tips and wildfire safety messages throughout the day. Legendary Texas musicians Ray Benson and Jimmie Vaughn were also on hand, and Chief Kerr presented each of them with an AFD Challenge Coin. A great time was had by all...check out the photos below!

Garner Wildnerness Rescue Competition

The Llama Mountain Team, anchored by the Austin Fire Department's Special Operations Team, took top honors at the recent Garner Wilderness Rescue Competition, hosted by Texas Rescue Competition. The Llama Mountain Rescue won both the Vertical and Advanced Competition, and captured the High Point Trophy for the fourth year in a row.

MetroRail Collison

On Monday, October 10, 2011, the MetroRail was involved in a Train/Pedestrian collision. After taking care of the pedestrian who suffered critical injuries, crews from Ladder 8, Rescue 28, and Engine 28 assisted 20 passengers off the train and onto buses to continue their commute. Kudos for Cindy Lyons, Our New OHN!

"I'm currently going through the light-duty process from an injury I received while on duty. I've had little luck with the process up until yesterday (September 21). I met with Cindy Lyons in the morning, and discussed my case and the issues I was experiencing with it. Within an hour of our conversation, she had called me and gotten me the information I needed to move forward with the process. Today I will be back in physical therapy thanks to her. I don't know what her job is but having a professional review IOJ claims on a weekly basis would sure help get people back out to operations."

Editor's Note: Cindy is AFD's new Occupational Health Nurse (OHN). She will be officed at Wellness, and will manage and coordinate the department's Workers' Compensation program and activities. Cindy is a seasoned professional with more than 20 years of work experience, the majority of which has been in the workers' compensation and occupational health field. Prior to joining AFD, she was the Disability-Health Services Manager for General Electric in Houston, where she managed, coordinated, and facilitated all personal and workers' compensation disability cases and case management for the U.S.-based oil and gas population. Cindy is a graduate of McNeese State University, Lake Charles, Louisiana with a degree in Nursing. Cindy has lived, traveled, and worked with companies throughout the United States, and has an extensive background in public safety.

Free Sports Classes For AFD Families

Sportball is offering free sports classes to AFD families. Below are the class descriptions, times, dates, etc. Spaces in these classes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What is Sportball?
Sportball is sports instruction program that teaches fundamental sports skills to young children. Our program is non-competitive, which means the kids learn step-by-step instruction that focuses on building skills and confidence. Scrimmages and game schedules are not our primary focus. Our primary goal is to give each child a boost in athleticism, awareness of the game, and a chance to discover their sports potential. At Sportball a certified coach will lead your child through sports drills, scrimmages, and other fun motor-skill and teamwork games.

Class Locations
Sportball offers sports classes in every season at several locations across Austin. Free classes to Fire and Rescue familes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis at the following locations. Classes last one hour. Your child will need tennis shoes and a water bottle for the soccer class (shin guards are "nice to have" but not required), and a baseball glove and tennis shoes for the baseball class. The only thing needed for the mutil-sport class is tennis shoes.

AFD Captain's Daughter "Patient Champion" at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital

"My name is Toby Heidel, and I’m currently assigned to AFD Ed Services as the C-Shift Field Training Officer. My daughter, Maya, has a disease that affects the bones in her hip joints called Legge-Calve-Perthes disease. For the last 2 ½ years, she’s been receiving treatment for her condition at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas. The hospital is an amazing facility with some of the best doctors in the world for her condition (one of them literally wrote the text book on her disease!). Perhaps the most amazing thing about Scottish Rite Hospital is the fact that they charge their patients absolutely nothing. ALL the care and surgery that Maya has gotten there has not cost us a dime. It’s pretty incredible.

"Each year, the hospital is the beneficiary from funds raised at the Dallas White Rock Marathon. For the event, 5 'Patient Champions' are chosen from the thousands of patients that Scottish Rite serves to represent the hospital at various fundraising and PR events. This year, Maya was chosen as the Central Texas Patient Champion! We’ve been delighted at the opportunity to help the hospital out in any way we can in light of the free care that Maya has received there.

Check out this photo of Lt. Travis Maher and BC Warren Weidler at the World Trade Center site, who were in NYC over the weekend and attended mass for the 343 firefighters who died on September 11. They also marched in the review parade. Chief Weidler tells us that the FDNY was very appreciative of the AFD presence in NYC, especially given all the wildfires we have been dealing with.

Centex Charity Hockey Game This Sunday: Fundraiser for Cole Meadows

The Central Texas Alliance is a non-profit organization, made up of local police, fire, EMS, and active military personnel. The event will remember those who gave their lives on 9/11, and at the same time, help someone in need. This year, money will be raised for 9 year old Cole Meadows, son of AFD Fire Specialist Alan Meadows (Q27/B), who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2009. Lt. Kevin Kalmus Receives Award at Fire-Rescue International

Last week, Lt. Kevin Kalmus traveled to the Fire-Rescue International Conference in Atlanta to accept their Company Officer of the Year award. As part of his recognition, Lt. Kalmus was awarded $1,000. In typical Kevin fashion, he chose to donate those funds in the name of AFD Engine 16/C to the family of recently deceased Dallas firefighter Lt. Todd Krodel, who died in the line of duty on August 14.

And while he was in Atlanta, Lt. Kalmus asked various vendors and manufacturers to match AFD's donation--he managed to raise another $6,000 for Lt. Krodel's family! This is just another example of why Lt. Kalmus was the perfect choice for the Company Officer of the Year award. In his words, "My opinion about the award is that, while it has my name on it, it's really about my crew and how we became successful as a team. If they didn't see value in the things I asked from them, then I would have failed as a leader. As far as the money goes, I never felt that it was mine and I just saw it as an opportunity to do something meaningful."

Car Explodes Inches from Firefighter's Face

Despite a car exploding inches from his face, a steadfast Los Angeles firefighter put out the blaze and left the scene with no injuries. The incident happened Aug. 19 in the 5300 block of Wilshire Boulevard, according to dramatic video of the incident posted on YouTube by user Morningstaric.

"As they were attacking the fire, it appears from the video, that an airbag went off, sending sparks," said LAFD Capt. Jaime Moore. "They had their personal protective equipment on, so he was not injured."

"As you can see in the video, he didn't event flinch," Moore said. "He took a step back and continued fighting the fire." (Click on the link below to watch the video.)

Car fires are common occurrences for the LAFD, although thanks to changes in automotive technology, the danger level has risen in recent years, said Moore.

"This is something we're starting to see more of with the permutation of air bags and the permutation of stronger metals in vehicles," said Moore.

Unlike the mostly natural upholstery of older models, cars nowadays include materials, such as polycarbonate plastic, that emit dangerous gases when burning. In the video, the dramatic explosion is most likely amplified by magnesium, which creates bright lights when it burns, said Moore.

Build-A-Backpack Campaign

On Friday, August 5, 2011, AFD presented 53 backpacks and additional school supplies to the COA Build-A-Back Campaign Coordinator; 53 is significant because it represents each of our fire stations and division locations. Outdoor Cooking Safety Press Conference

This past Friday, August 5, we held a press conference with Councilmember Mike Martinez to launch our public education campaign on outdoor cooking safety. Check out the photos below! And while we were there, KVUE decided they wanted to do a story on what our folks are doing to protect themselves during this heat wave. So off we went to Station 22, where they interviewed FF Robert Sandoval (who was also kind enough to don all his gear in the 100+ degree heat for demonstration purposes!). Special thanks to him, Lt. John Green, and all the folks at Station 22 for making the reporter and cameraman feel so welcome! A couple of photos from that portion of the day are below as well.

Recent Collapse Incident Provides Realism to Summer CE Course

One of our summer CE offerings was a refresher on Building Construction, in which we stressed the weakness and dangers of lightweight truss construction. Reality provided a classic example, when on August 4, this 80’ x 40’ area of roof collapsed in the middle of a scorching summer afternoon. Fortunately the building had been unoccupied for several years and no victims or injuries were discovered.

Notice also the attached two story portion still standing? It was a day care center for children.

When the trusses failed, classic V-pattern collapses were seen down both walls.

Notice how the trusses completely came apart at the gusset plates. And this was with no fire and no impact loads, just a long, hot summer combined with suspect construction methods.

This was the last truss still in place; notice how it is starting to separate as well.

Kudos to E22C, E66C and Q35C for their work at the scene and for the photos, many more of which can be seen at G:\Operations\Batt05\C_SHIFT05\collapse 0811. And thanks to Ed Services who continue to turn out relevant, timely continuing education.

Ladder 8/B Shift Kudos

A note from our colleagues at EMS. Way to go, folks! (Firefighters from two different shifts and three different stations: Capt. Bunn, FF Daugherty, FF Slusher, and FF Paskos.)

"We would like to express our deepest gratitude for Ladder 8's crew today. They are a little mix of A & B shift we believe. They went above and beyond their way to help us on a very difficult call with a psych patient today.

"We were called by a female who wanted help from EMS. When we arrived, the patient did not believe we were EMS and asked that we would leave her apartment. We tried to explain several times and different ways that we were the paramedics she called for, but she refused to listen or talk to us. When Ladder 8 showed, we told them what was going on and they immediately went in and made patient contact. To our surprise, the patient responded very well to them. The patient had questions in which Fire attempted several times to refer to us for answering, but she would not listen. Finally David (the Lieutenant) made the suggestion that they (AFD) could ride with her to the hospital if that made her feel more comfortable since she could not ride in the fire truck with them. After a long talk, the patient finally ok'd. AFD assisted the patient to the stretcher, transported her to the ambulance. The patient still would not let any of us obtain vitals or do an exam on her, but we got her somewhere she felt safe and could get the proper medical attention she needed.

Ray Davis Pass the Torch Basketball Camp, July 26 - 28

Through this annual effort, Austin children ages 6-12 are learning basketball skills and the value of good citizenry. The annual basketball camp, now called the Ray Davis Pass the Torch Camp, is being held this year at the Virginia R. Brown Recreation Center, 7500 Blessing Ave., from Tuesday, July 26 through Thursday, July 28. Boys and girls will have fun learning teamwork and basketball skills. It is co-sponsored by the Austin African-American Firefighters Association, AFD 's Community Outreach section, and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department's (PARD) Roving Leaders program. During the week, kids learn fundamentals of the game, fire safety, and hear guest speakers. Austin Hook and Ladder Co., No. 1 - Lantern

Here is a great introduction to one of the most precious artifacts being displayed in the Austin Fire Museum. The story of how it was acquired and its journey through the years is a favorite. Special thanks to FS Jerry Cohen and Lt. Josh Miller who provided this information to help folks be more familiar with our history and possibly the most important item in the Museum's inventory.

The Lantern

Check out this picture of Old Central Fire Station No. 1 from 1915. Colorado Fire Company No. 2 is the pumper on the left and Hook and Ladder Fire Co. No. 1 is pictured at right.

Now, focus your attention above the front door at the bottom left corner of the fire station. You’ll see a lantern hanging from the second floor balcony and positioned above the front door.

In 2004, when the Austin Fire Department Historical Society and Museum was being organized, a gentleman in his 80′s got word of a fire museum in the works and contacted us. The man, Leo Mueller, Jr., mentioned that his father was Chief of the Austin Fire Department in 1913 when it was volunteer. Following Chief Mueller’s involvement with the Austin Fire Department, he somehow gained ownership of this Hook and Ladder 1 lantern. Many years later, Mueller, Sr., passed on the lantern to Mueller, Jr. Mueller, Jr., hung the lantern as his bedroom light fixture for well over 30 years! After learning of the opening of the Austin Fire Museum, Mr. Mueller donated the lantern for display. The Hook and Ladder 1 lantern is one of the AFD Museum’s most prized possessions and we are eternally grateful to Mr. Leo Mueller, Jr. for his donation.

There is a frosted glass on the rear with the inscription March 23, 1861. The significance of that date is unclear to the AFD Historical Society. We have found several dates of organization and charters for Hook and Ladder #1, with September 25, 1857 being the most common, but have not yet found documentation of the significance of March 23, 1861.

If you see/hear fireworks being used in your neighborhood, please call 311, NOT 911 to report it.
The fire danger is extremely high. If you’re going to barbeque, please use propane and not charcoal. Remember, the use of charcoal is banned in all city parks.
The Travis County Commissioners Court has banned the use, sale, and/or possession of fireworks within the county through July 27 with Governor Perry’s signature. This includes any type of firework that has an ignition source, including sparklers (which would be allowed under “normal” conditions).
Tossing cigarette butts out of car windows, leaving cooking unattended, and parking your car on dry grass are all recipes for fire disaster.

Please help us keep you safe this holiday weekend!

Each year, the Austin Fire Department's fire stations serve as drop-off locations for Family Eldercare's fan drive, a program designed to get new fans into the homes of our elderly who may be suffering in the Texas heat without air conditioning. Can you even imagine dealing with 105 degree day with no A/C? At the conclusion of the drive, a celebration event is held at Threadgill's. Chief Kerr and the crew from Engine 6/C shift were there last Friday to help mark the occasion and this successful partnership!

Congratulations to Austin Fire Department Captain David Brietzke (E03/B), who has been named “Firefighter of the Year” by American Legion Post 76. Captain Brietzke was chosen for his outstanding service to the Austin and Travis County communities, as well as for his service to his country in the United States Air Force, where he has won several commendations.

Captain Brietzke has been a member of the Austin Fire Department for more than 21 years. You might remember one of his most memorable rescues from several years ago: he was one of two firefighters responsible for rescuing a young woman trapped on a boat on Lake Austin near the Hula Hut that ultimately went through the Tom Miller Dam.

Each year the American Legion recognizes public safety officials at the county, district and state levels. This recognition is based on recommendations forwarded from the various departments in the county/city and judged at the local level. Captain Brietzke’s award has now been forwarded to the American Legion’s District level for further consideration at the state level.

Congratulations to Division Chief Mike Frick

Congratulations to Division Chief Mike Frick (Shift Commander/A Shift) who was recently selected to become a Task Force Leader (TFL) for Texas Task Force 1! Chief Frick will serve on the White Team and was chosen after a selection process that included a written application/resume and questionnaire, and an interview with the current Task Force Leaders, TEEX Program Managers, and a Task Force Leader from another state.

Chief Frick I has been involved with the Task Force for more than 10 years as a Planning Team Manager on the Red Team. There are six TFLs divided up to allow two TFLs for each of the three teams (Red, White, Blue) on Texas Task Force 1. The two-TFL concept is to allow for 24-hour operations, one Day Shift and one Night Shift, if the mission requires this type of model. The normal Federal Type 1 Urban Search and Rescue Team works for FEMA and is comprised of approximately 80 personnel, and all associated equipment, subdivided into specialties such as Rescue (shoring, breaching, etc.), Search (canine and technical), HazMat, Logistics, Safety, Medical, and Plans.

Texas Task Force 1 is also a State response team for events that occur within or adjacent to the State of Texas. This allows a great deal of flexibility in the team composition to include Water/Boat assets, Helicopter Rescue crew, Quick Response Forces (a smaller profile mobile 'light' US&R team), the larger Type 1, and Texas Military Forces. They work in partnership with local authorities when requested by the Texas Department of Emergency Management.

With Chief Frick's appointment, there are now two active AFD TFLs (Chief Weidler, Chief Frick), and one retired AFD (Chief David Fiero). Along with two TFLs from Houston FD, and the retired Chief from Grapevine, this group comprises the six TFLs.

The American Lung Association thanks all the firefighters and AFD personnel who participated in the "Victory Climb" of Frost Tower last Saturday, May 15. Because of you, our event was an overwhelming success, with more than 500 climbers and close to $140,000 raised to help fight lung cancer, asthma, and other lung disease. It was truly impressive to see so many firefighters climb the tower in full gear and we received many compliments from participants who were amazed at the level of community support from the AFD. We really value our partnership with AFD and it just gets better every year - here's to the 2012 Tower Climb!

A special thank you to Scott Bartell, AFD 1; Gabe Thompson, AFD 18; Harold Mican, AFD 15; and Jim Keys, Oak Hill - for taking time from their busy jobs to help us get out the word and recruit more than 50 firefighters for this event!

AFD Assists at Recent Fire Service Survivors Conference

This conference, held recently in San Antonio, offers survivors of firefighters who have died in the line of duty a variety of workshops focusing on wellness, healing, and practical concerns. The organizers were having trouble getting enough help to transport families from the airport to the conference. They called Chief Kerr at the last minute and AFD stepped up to the plate. Education Services provided three vans and six personnel to assist in moving the folks. Please see the note below from Battalion Chief Thayer Smith:

"Chiefs,

The assistance we provided to the Fallen Firefighters Foundation went very well. With our 3 vans and 6 personnel we reportedly had the largest contingent of assistance. Each group made approximately 4 runs between the airport and the hotel. They moved people and luggage. The “airport” Lieutenant would meet his group of people and then assist them and their luggage to the van driver for transport to the hotel. Between airport runs the vans also shuttled attendees to various events downtown.

"All returned safely to Austin around 10 pm last night. The guys report that the participants were astounded and much appreciative that it was Austin firefighters that did the majority of the work in San Antonio.

"Sounds like we got some great national PR for the assistance our folks provided."

Chief Kerr's response: "Thanks to AFD – I am so proud of our department and our ability to respond to a short notice request. Another example of 'Our Mission Goes Beyond Our Name'!!! Like you said, Thayer – it gave me pleasure to know that the AFD logo and patch was in San Antonio!!!"

Firefighters are disproportionately affected by all types of lung disease. In the line of duty, firefighters may experience exposure to gases, chemicals and other substances. This exposure can lead to increased incidence of lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and other lung diseases. Funds raised from the Climb support the ALA with lung disease education, advocacy and research programs.

MDA Final Total...Or Is It?

Folks from the central Texas chapter of the MDA came by earlier this week and presented Chief Kerr with a plaque (see photo below) that announced Austin firefighters had raised more than $108,000 in this year's Fill the Boot campaign!! Although that didn't meet the goal of $150,000, it is significantly more than was raised last year.

But wait, there's more...literally! Several deposits have yet to be made, so we expect that grand total to go up a bit. In the meantime, give yourselves a pat on the back...outstanding work!

Regarding an Unnamed Austin Firefighter:

"Chief Kerr,

"As I'm sure you hear about the ones that don't go well, I want you to know about one that was above and beyond the call of duty. My mother and aunt were driving from Austin back to Houston on Sunday, 4/10/11. As they got on Hwy 71, they had a blowout that shredded the tire. No sooner had they pulled over when a "wonderful, cleancut, muscular young man" (only description Mom could provide) stopped to help. He blocked traffic with his pickup and went right to work changing the tire. Less than 10 minutes from time of flat tire, they were on their way again. Mom tried to pay the Good Samaritan but he refused to consider it. She asked if he went to college nearby to which he smiled broadly and thanked her for the compliment and explained that he is with the Austin Fire Department and works on the west side.

"I'm sure this off duty firefighter had things to do and places to go, but he did not hesitate to stop and help. He didn't know he was helping a firefighter's mother and aunt, he just knew someone needed help. Thank you, we're very appreciative."

"On behalf of Pack 909, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Station 30! Christopher Throop, Matt Heck, Chuck Coombs and George Gonzalez went beyond the call of duty in providing a Fire Station tour for the Cub Scouts and parents of our pack.

"They all made us feel at home and welcome! The tour had just begun when a fire alarm sounded. These firemen responded instantly, but promised to return quickly if possible. Our young Cub Scouts got to witness firsthand how firemen respond to a fire alarm.

"We moved outside of the Fire Station to await their return. Just as we were discussing whether to remain or leave, a familiar voice sounded over the Fire Station’s loudspeaker announcing that they were returning. Our Cubs cheered!

"Our Cub Scouts were thrilled and it was well worth the wait! I have attached some pictures for your pleasure. Your firemen took their value time to share their experience and stories with our sons. It was a wonderful experience that we will always cherish!

"I want to thank the Austin FD, Texas Forest Service and all other responding units for saving my house and many others on Scenic Brook April 17 in the Oak Hill fire. A house on the other side of my neighbor burned and other houses within a stone's throw are destroyed. The firefighters on scene apparently dug a trench behind my neighbor's house and I'm convinced that kept the fire out of my yard and in my house. The air support was swift and much appreciated, and the firefighters on the ground have my gratitude for a job well done. Thank you very much." -- Anonymous

Fires in West Texas/TIMFAS Deployment

Welcome home to all of our folks who were deployed to West Texas during the last few weeks! We had one crew who came home several days ago and their replacements are headed home today as we speak. Special thanks to all of the members noted below who represented AFD so well and especially FF Jimmy Taylor (E22/A) and Capt. Steve Street (L08/A) who provided some of the spectacular photos you see here (others came from the State Firemen's and Fire Marshals' Association). (Note: Look for a first-person report from Captain Street in the next few days!)

On April 10, 2011, AFD provided an Engine (four-person crew), and a Strike Team Leader, Capt Street. The Engine crew was Lt. Josh Portie (E02/C), FS Bruce Mayo (E02/C), FF James Taylor (E22/A), and FF Josh Simpson (E21/C). They returned the evening of April 16, 2011.

On April 15, 2011, AFD sent a replacement crew of Team 2: FS Shawn Clopton (E39/C), FS Don Caldwell (E21/C), FF Sean Cummings (E31/C), and FF Anthony Segovia (E66/A). They returned the evening of April 21, 2011.

AFD Annual Bass Tourney Results

The AFD Annual Bass Tournament was held this year on Lake Travis with 11 teams competing for the top prize and bragging rights. With light winds and temperatures in the mid 80s, the bass were very eager to bite and everyone caught a lot of fish. Big Bass honors went to Dennis Derryl with a 5.5 lb. black bass, and he and his partner also took first place honors with a five-fish weight of 14.3 lbs. Second place went to Carrie Stewart and Marcus Faske with 10.5 lbs. Third place went to the team of Richard Meyers and Steve Nardecchia with 9.9 lbs. And the team of Mario Gonzalez and his friend, Jim took fourth place with 8.6 lbs. Everyone had a great time so plan on coming out next year to fish. AFD Community Relations Basketball Games

"AFD's Basketball Team has been invited to play in the St. John's Community Center Basketball Tournament on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. at the Virginia R. Brown Recreation Center (7500 Blessing Ave.)The community is very excited about having its Fire Department there and wants to make this a big event.

"We have been also invited to play against the faculty at Gus Garcia Middle School (7414 Johnny Morris Rd.) on May 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The students and staff are very much excited about us coming out to play an exhibition game to close their 2010-2011 school year and show off the good community relations AFD has with its citizens."

That's Not Where That Belongs

"Call came in as a 'traffic injury' one block from Station 5. Call text stated 'car in house' as we pulled up. There was an elderly lady was in that room where the car entered. One firefighter handled the driver while myself and another firefighter went inside to free the lady. She was pinned by her feet/legs; we freed her legs and she is in stable condition. She was more worried about putting clothes on when we put her on the backboard. The car pushed her through a well into her bathroom."

Some interesting stats:

Ninety-seven (97) percent of AFD stations "filled the boot".
More than $13,000 was raised from 1,534 pounds of coin.
Austin's Fill the Boot effort raised enough to send 134 kids to camp, fund 48 hours of research, and repair 214 wheelchairs.

WHY: To show support for all those for whom breathing is an uphill climb. The American Lung Association is the nation's leader in the fight for clean air, funding research to cure deadly lung diseases, educating school and medical personnel to recognize and treat asthma attacks in children, campaigning for smoke-free workplaces and standing up to the tobacco industry to protect our children from the dangers of smoking.

OTHER: You do not have to climb stairs to participate! The vertically challenged are invited to stay on the ground level for our street fair. Olympic gold medalist Mary Jo Fernandez (tennis star and asthma spokesperson) is scheduled to participate.
